Veteran Employment Program

Wilson Security values the sacrifice our veterans have made for the security of Australia and our interests. We also acknowledge how difficult and confronting it can be for a veteran and their families to transition from military life to civilian life following many years of service.

Wilson Security recognises the unique skillset and values veterans bring to civilian life, which make them ideal candidates for employment in the security industry.

Wilson Security has been a long-time employer of veterans, with 115 veterans currently employed on the Defence contract, which equates to 11% of our total Defence workforce.

Wilson Security is committing to ensuring that 20% of our Defence workforce is a Veteran and/or ADF family member by the end of the initial contract term.

Veteran Employment Program

Wilson Security launched our Veteran Employment Program in partnership with Soldier On and the RSL in 2022.

Wilson Security partnered with Soldier On and the RSL to develop a careers pathways program for Australian veterans. The program will help them gain employment as they transition out of military service back into civilian life.

Launched in 2022, This specialised training package and career pathways program forms the basis of the training and security licensing for ADF veterans to become Security Officers within Wilson Security.

The program provides the opportunity for ADF veterans to obtain a fully funded Certificate II in Security Operations and guaranteed employment, either full or permanent part-time, provided they successfully complete the training and other employment conditions.

The program provides training through a recognised RTO, financial support to obtain their security licence, and formal mentoring from veterans already employed within Wilson to assist participants in their transition to civilian life and a career in the Security Industry.

After successfully implementing a pilot program in early 2022, the program has expanded and become a permanent arrangement.

To date, the program has successfully coordinated the employment of an additional 28 veterans in our national security business.

As a recent graduate of the Wilson Security Veteran Program, I am immensely proud to be associated with an organisation that not only values the service of veterans but actively supports our transition into civilian life. This program has not only equipped me with new skills but also instilled a sense of purpose and belonging. It's heartening to know that I'm not just an employee here, but a respected member of the team, and I look forward to contributing to our collective success. The commitment to supporting veterans is not just a policy, it's a lived reality, and I'm grateful to be a part of it.

Defence Family Members Employment Program

One essential aspect of making Defence Life like Community life is ensuring there are employment opportunities for ADF spouses and partners. Scenarios in which ADF families cannot find access to sustainable jobs increase the risk of early discharge requests from ADF personnel—this can be particularly prevalent in regional and remote bases.

We recognise the skillset spouses and adult family members offer, including their desire to play their own role in protecting our national security, understanding of ADF rank structure, and military life.

Based on the success and positive feedback for our Veteran Employment Program, Wilson Security implemented an equivalent program for ADF partners and adult children to provide employment opportunities when they are relocated as a consequence of their partner's or spouse's ADF service.

Launched in November 2022, this specialised training and career pathways program forms the basis of the training and security licensing for ADF partners and adult family members to become Security Officers within Wilson Security.

To commence the program, Wilson worked with the Defence Families of Australia (DFA), the official families advisory body to the Minister for Defence personnel and the Chief of the Defence Force, to design the program and seek potential candidates from their network of community liaison officers around Defence sites throughout Australia.

The program provides access to a fully funded course to obtain Certificate II in Security Operations. Upon successfully completing the training and other employment conditions, the candidate is guaranteed employment, either full or permanent part-time.

We are proud of the program's immediate uptake and ongoing success. Since its launch on 14 November 2022, it has amassed a significant number of enquiries and secured the employment of 26 ADF family members.

Providing security on a Defence base couldn’t be more different from working in the baking industry. When I saw the advertisement for security guards required for RAAF Tindal, and that Wilson security would pay for my course and licence as a Defence spouse member, it seemed too good an opportunity not to look into. The Wilson staff who I liaised with were very cooperative and responded quickly to all my needs. Within weeks they had me booked me onto a course and once finished, they paid for my Police clearance and security licence. I now work as part of the Wilson Security team at RAAF Tindal, where I feel I am doing a worthwhile and important role protecting the site assets, and access control. The other great thing with this arrangement, is when my partner gets a posting inter-state, I can look to transfer my skills with the Defence Access Control role within other Defence sites. In all my years as a defence spouse, this is the best scheme so far. Great initiative Wilson Security and thank you.
