Case Study: Enhancing Security and Safety for the Department of Transport & Planning, Victoria

Client: Victorian Department of Transport & Planning (DTP VIC)

Site Location: Victoria

The Challenge:

In April 2023, Wilson Security's in-house Corporate Risk & Resilience team were engaged by the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning (DTP VIC) to undertake Security Risk Reviews of several nominated properties comprising depots, offices and Customer Service Centres across both metropolitan and regional Victoria.

The task was to assess the adequacy of current security measures and identify potential areas for improvement to enhance the protection of the assets.

Wilson Security's Solution:

The focus of this engagement was to:

  • Review the protective security strategy at the nominated properties
  • Identify exploitable gaps/security vulnerabilities
  • Provide advice on the suitability of current security measures
  • Recommend improvements to the physical, electronic, operational and procedural security overlay at the depots, offices and Customer Service Centres.

This would, in turn, support an overall uplift of the nominated properties, including an ongoing preventative maintenance program to monitor and manage risks across the portfolio and diminish reactive rectification works associated with failing, inconsistent and aging assets.

Outcomes:

The Victorian Department of Transport and Planning was provided with a comprehensive portfolio report as well as detailed site security audits for 33 sites that assisted DTP VIC in gaining a better understanding of:

(i) What assets are present at depots, customer service centres and DTP VIC offices

(ii) The nature of incidents that have occurred in the past at those locations

(iii) How gaps/vulnerabilities were and could be exploited in the future

(iv) What measures must be implemented to secure the assets adequately and improve the safety of persons at the nominated properties

Security risk levels were calculated, and pragmatic, fit-for-purpose recommendations were put forward to assist DoTP in reducing security risks at the assessed sites to a level that is As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).

Data/Results:

As a result of Wilson Security's intervention, the Department identified key security and safety issues and created strategies to mitigate risks to the organisation.

Client Testimonial:

"The Wilson Risk Team excelled in their approach and output. Communication and interaction were key to the scope delivery, and their expertise shone in the results presented. Significant and critical risks were also flagged during the process to allow the Department to take immediate action.

As a representative of the DTP VIC in the property security area, I will certainly consider Wilson Risk for all future audits and assessments. If prompted, I would recommend their services to any organisation."
