A Making Tracks Case Study: Ethan's Journey to Success
Graduating from Year 12 in 2022, Ethan faced uncertainties about his future career path as he transitioned from school to the workforce.
Ethan, who is diagnosed with Autism, was struggling to enter the workforce due to challenges in learning and retention. Digital literacy posed a significant hurdle, affecting his ability to secure employment.
Initial efforts through Maxima, under the NDIS and VTEC Tapa programs, were unsuccessful, leaving Ethan needing a more tailored approach.
Intervention by Wilson Security
Ethan's turning point came with his introduction to the Making Tracks program at an information session hosted by Wilson Security. The Wilson Security Indigenous Engagement Officer (IEO) played a pivotal role, providing Ethan with a comprehensive understanding of the program and conducting initial pre-screening.
However, Ethan needed help with the computer-based components, which accounted for 95% of the theoretical parts of the program. Ethan often needed additional support each morning to log on to a computer and needed the trainer to check in occasionally to ensure he was completing the right content.
Tailored Support and Advocacy
Recognising Ethan's unique challenges, the IEO stepped in as an advocate. They coordinated with the RTO for adjusted learning methods and arranged for a support person from Maxima to assist Ethan regularly.
Furthermore, by pairing Ethan with a study buddy and offering ongoing mentoring, the IEO ensured Ethan received the personalised attention he needed to succeed. Thanks to this support, Ethan obtained his Certificate II in Security Operations.
Ethan's Triumph
Ethan completed the Making Tracks Program in February 2023.
His determination, coupled with the unwavering support from Wilson Security, led him to obtain his Security license by August 2023 and begin his career in security the following month.
This accomplishment was beyond Ethan's initial expectations and is a testament to the power of advocacy and personalised support.
Conclusion and Future Prospects
Today, working in South Australia at a cultural precinct, Ethan's aspirations have taken flight. Not only is he gainfully employed, but he is also planning for his future, saving for his first car and a well-deserved holiday. His interest in advancing his career in security speaks volumes about his newfound confidence and ambition.
Ethan's journey with Wilson Security's Making Tracks program is a heartwarming reminder of how targeted support and advocacy can pave the way for success, even in the face of significant challenges.
